Mandopop diva A-mei’s 10th and final Kaohsiung concert during her ASMeiR 2023 World Tour last Sunday (Apr 16) was a memorable and emotional performance for many.
The singer, who was suffering from throat inflammation, lost her voice several times during the show and broke down on stage.
Despite this, the apologetic A-mei, 50, insisted on putting on a full show and even offered a do-over.
While many had nothing but praise for her dedication and professionalism, she also drew criticism from her haters.
And this really riled up A-mei’s backing vocalist, Shivia Lee.
Speaking up for A-mei in a lengthy Instagram Story post, she wrote: “If a singer suddenly loses her voice before a performance, she must bite the bullet and go on stage… she must rely on willpower to overcome fear and guilt, and try hard to sing and persevere for three hours. Besides singing, she also has to interact with the audience. Every word she says is actually wasting her remaining voice.”
She added that no one should be criticised or questioned after putting in so much effort.
“What you saw and heard may not be her best performance, but it definitely demonstrates what persistence is,” she continued.
“Can you endure the huge pressure for more than three hours like her? If you can’t empathise, then please shut up. If you don’t understand, don’t talk nonsense. Go play in the sand, kids.”
A-mei’s bartender boyfriend Sam Yao, who was in the audience that night, also took to Facebook to share his thoughts.
Praising her for “singing with too much heart”, he revealed that he was so moved to tears by her dedication that he had to go to the washroom to regain his composure.
“This woman who loves to sing seems to have an added level of magic. She is really too powerful!” he wrote, adding the hashtag “That imperfection is the truly the most perfect”.
