TVB actor Mat Yeung has kept a low profile following his prison release. He had served an 18-day sentence for drink driving in January.
Yesterday (May 11), the 41-year-old made his first public appearance at the press conference for Night Beauties, TVB’s adaptation of Ruby Lin‘s Netflix drama Light The Night. The series premieres tomorrow (May 15).
When speaking to the media, Mat shared that he has spent a lot of time reflecting on his ways and is not afraid of the stigma that comes from having served time.
“This is a fact. I’m not afraid because it was a necessary punishment. I will try my best to be the best version of myself in the future,” he said.
He added that his biggest takeaway from his prison stint is to cherish the things he has as well as time with his parents.
He also shared that he has since quit drinking, though he will make an exception when attending banquets.
Helmed by filmmaker Wong Jing, Night Beauties centres around Hong Kong nightclubs in the ’80s and ’90s.
Besides Mat, who plays a young hooligan who “looks after” the clubs, the drama also stars Monica Chan, Elaine Yiu, Jacky Cai, Jacquelin Ch’ng, and his real life girlfriend Lisa Ch’ng.
During the press conference, Mat also addressed rumours that his scenes were cut and he was relegated from lead actor to second male lead because of his conviction.
“There is no mention of whether I was the first or second male lead. We just act according to the script,” he said, adding that none of his scenes were removed.
Is he worried that the drama will garner negative feedback because of him?
While Mat admitted that negative reports on him are not new, he does not pay attention to them.
His focus now is to promote Night Beauties and will wait for TVB to arrange future projects.
