The Audition Trick Trainees Use To Look Like Aces, Revealed By A Former K-Pop Audition Manager

“Aces” of K-Pop groups are loved and adored by everyone. Idols like BTS‘s Jungkook, Red Velvet‘s Seulgi, SHINee‘s Taemin, and EXO‘s Baekhyun, are known for being talented in all aspects, singing and dancing, two crucial skills that make a talented K-Pop idol. So, it makes sense that every aspiring trainee who can sing and dance very well wants to showcase both of these skills.

Unfortunately, most agencies require auditionees to pick between singing and dancing to showcase only one of the skills. Despite this obstacle, a former K-Pop audition manager revealed that trainees have figured out how to give the impression of being an “Ace” through a smart trick.

The manager shared that one’s attire can be the first step to showing that one can both sing and dance. He explained that the auditionees can let the judges know by wearing “clothes that look like [they] dance” while choosing to sing during their audition.

This will give the judges the impression that they can dance, all while demonstrating their singing skills — making them see the applicant as a contestant for both categories.

The audition manager added that sometimes judges ask contestants to dance after they have sung or vice versa. Those who chose to dance first will have a harder time singing afterward due to being out of breath — making singing the preferred category among potential ace trainees.

Since there are so many aspirants that come to auditions to dance, I can’t help thinking ‘Uhm, he(she) must really bad at singing’ about people that sign up with dance.

The manager went on to reveal that between two applicants that have similar qualifications and decent coordination, the agencies are more likely to pick the applicant who is the better singer.

One reason the audition manager gave is that dance skills are “easy to increase” through training compared to singing, which is considered “just talent” by people.

That’s why in actuality, there are lots of groups where the main vocalist isn’t as attractive compared to other members.
